Fabian mentioned something that is well worth consideration, regarding manual focus of this lens. The 18-55 is not designed to be manually focused while in AF mode. Trying to manually focus this lens improperly can result in the same situation in all your future 18-55 lenses if this was your practice, and continues. The 18-55 IS is pretty sharp for a kit lens, so you don't lose a great deal out of using the DPP lens distortion correction and rotation tools. I usually compensate for them by bumping the sharpness up 1 point, though this can make the noise more obvious in low light shots. Canon discontinued the 18-55mm because the 15-45mm is smaller, lighter, and cheaper to build. There was nothing wrong with the 18-55mm. Depending on your budget, you may want to also consider the 18-150mm lens. If you get a good copy, it will be just as good as the 15-45mm and 18-55mm.
